For some reason everyone seems to be under the impression that running a blog is easy.
It may seem extremely easy on a Sunday when you having nothing else to do. After all, it's just a blog! How difficult could it be?
I'm incredibly sorry to inform you that running a blog is not easy, especially if you're still in school or you have a full time job. Blogging is hard work for people who only do it for a living, imagine just how much hard work it will be if you already are devoting half of your day to something else.
But please, don't be discouraged! Blogging can be manageable even with a full time job or school. All you need is -
> And a little bit of luck.
A lot of labour goes into producing exciting, new and lucid content. Apart from the content, you have to be able to handle social medias, the layout, design, advertising and so so so much more. But I am talking about successful blogs, if you just want to start a blog and get 1 page view from your mother every week then be my guest! Enough of my ranting, the real reason you came here was to read the 7 things you should know when starting a blog, and here it is.
7. It's extremely time consuming*
Apart from the fact that handling a blog is difficult,it is extremely time consuming. But that's just the thing, if you don't care and writing is one of your passions then its shouldn't feel time consuming! It should just feel fun. The moment handling your blog starts to feel; strenuous, boring and like a chore, that's your cue to to find something else to do.
* Cue my rant
6. Youtube Tutorials are your best friends.
The amount of times I have had to look up the craziest things that I never thought i would have to on google are too many to count.
I have never been one for coding or programming, but I wasn't outrageously bad at it either. From photoshop tutorials to ' How to code in HTML' you will need help. of course, there are people who hire people to do all of this for them but then after a month, you're going to start hating the way your blog looks and want to change it again. So I personally wouldn't want to pay someone to customise my blog for me,but to each their own. Self criticism is natural and necessary.
5. You're going to feel like giving up
Whether it's because you're having writers block or readers aren't flowing in like you had imagined, you will feel like giving up. And literally the moment you feel like that is the moment when you realise that that is why you should strive on. You'll know what i'm talking about when it happens to you. Speaking of readers......
4. Readers will come..... Eventually.
Never be discouraged when readers didn't draft toward your blog the second after you launched it because it is just that amazing. It's not that your blog isn't amazing, it's just that building a loyal readership and getting people to talk about your blog takes some time. You will attract the right readers in the right time. Patience is a virtue.
3. Content will forever be King.
I'm pretty sure you've heard about the saying, " Content is king. ", Yeah well it's true.
Content is king and it will be forever. The best content will also attract more readers and honestly, when people are looking for quick, truthful information, your design, layout and all the other glamour you've added will come last. If you're spending too much time on the layout and design and you're articles are suffering because of it, you know you need to change something. Your primary focus should always be on your content.
2. Edit fiercely
Never be afraid to edit your post until you only have the a single introduction sentence left. Editing is vital in blogging! The best person in the whole world to find your flaws is you, and you should be using that to your advantage.
1. If you want it enough...
Anything can happen. Anything can happen. Yes, your blog could go viral and bring you millions of views per day and yes, you could get invited on Ellen.
Your blog can be anything you want it to be! Remember that even the biggest blogs started out the same way you did. Do you remember what i said in the beginning?
> And a little bit of luck.
goes a loooong way.
